HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 of Video Encoders – What Are the Differences Between Them?

HDMI interfaces are common in video encoders featuring high-definition multimedia interface cables that transmit video and audio data with high quality. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a proprietary audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data from an HDMI-compliant source device, such as a display controller, to a compatible computer monitor, video projector, digital television, or digital audio device. HDMI is a digital replacement for analog video standards. HDMI is an interface to transmit high quality uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data. With the fast growing technology, HDMI launched multiple versions with different functions. The table below shows the frequently seen HDMI specifications among audio and video related products.   There are several differences between HDMI 1.4 and 2.0 of video encoders.

1. Different resolutionsHDMI 1.4 is the commonly used interface cable at present, which can only transmit images at the highest resolution – 1080P. With the universal use of 4K technology, the HDMI 2.0 has enhanced support for 4K UHD transmission with supporting to 3840×2160 resolution. With the great enhancement in the support for 4K ultra high-definition transmission, it improves multiple video and audio technologies.  2. different frame rate and broadbandHDMI 1.4 video encoders interface can only reach a resolution of 3840×2160 and a frame rate of 30FPS at a bandwidth of 10.2Gbps.The bandwidth of HDMI2.0 has been expanded to 18Gbps, which can support 3840×2160 resolution and 50FPS, 60FPS frame rate.In fact, HDMI 1.4 version can already support 4K, but it is subject to the 10.2Gbps bandwidth.  3. Differences in color saturationThe HDMI cable of HDMI 1.4 interface only supports 8bit color depth. The HDMI 2.0 video encoder interface of the HDMI cable supports a 10-bit color depth. Interface 2.0 has a better color hierarchy than interface 1.4 with a more delicate picture.
